Once the new facility had officially opened its doors, locals were shown by Ye Yuanwenrui, a staff member, how to enter and leave the store, as well as borrow and return books.

"The book house has several special functions. It has equipment that allows books to be automatically swiped out and returned, an instrument that can sterilize books, and a big data display screen. It is really convenient for local residents who enjoy reading," Ye said.

"I am very grateful to the government for opening this facility. It helps to satisfy people's desire for knowledge. On weekends, children will come here to read books," said Guo Yuping, a resident from the village of Anjing in Yunyan.

The smart library allows visitors to borrow books at any time of day, while speeding up the circulation of books and increasing consumer choice.
