Guizhou University of Technology (formerly known as Guizhou Institute of Technology) was founded in 1958. In March 2000, the university merged with Guizhou Economic Management Cadre College to form the current Guizhou University of Technology. 

The Guizhou University of Technology has four campuses covering a total area of about 746,000 square meters. With continuous education reform, and discipline adjustment and integration, the university has developed into a comprehensive university focused on engineering and also equipped with other disciplines such as literature, science, economics, management, and law. 

The university has 12 colleges, four departments, and four teaching departments. It offers 47 undergraduate majors, and 18 junior college majors and higher vocational specialties. The university’s layout of departments and majors is reasonable with its disciplines covering the pillar industries of the national economy in the province. 

At present, the university has 16,754 students, including 10,149 undergraduate students, 509 graduate students, eight doctoral students, and 6,093 part-time adult students. It recruits students from 15 provinces and cities nationwide. 

In recent years, the school's teaching faculty has increased and now numbers 2,139 members, including 977 full-time teachers, 89 professors, and 302 associate professors.
